Our cast of 71 performed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for four audiences, plus a dress rehearsal for students of the Wichita Public Schools, April 10-12! It was a great show! Being part of a CPT production provides our cast and their families opportunities for growth in skills and in character. CPT full productions are made possible by donors and volunteers. Our costumes, sets, hair & makeup design, lighting and sound are all thanks to the talented and generous parents and community volunteers who serve CPT. “Who can take a sunrise
Sprinkle it with dew . . .
Cover it in chocolate
And a miracle or two?
The Candy Man can!”
Willy Wonka the Chocolatier is looking for a replacement. Someone to hand over his Wonka factory to. Who might be worthy to receive such a magical place? How will he find the right person? He decides to hold a Golden Ticket contest and give the five lucky winners a tour of his secret, mysterious factory.
Played by Oliver
“Dear Mr. Wonka,
I know that you’re a busy man . . .
You must have lots of mail to read
I’m writing for my fam’ly
‘Cause there’s nothing special that I need…”
Charlie Bucket lives with his mother and grandparents in a rickety shack of a house. The family can barely make ends meet, but Charlie doesn’t feel particularly needy. What he is lacking in provisions, he makes up for in imagination. His inventive mother, Mrs. Bucket, finds an old chair leg at the garbage dump to keep their fire going. She gives Charlie a notebook, which he fills with his inventive ideas and a heartfelt letter to Mr. Wonka. Is Charlie the one that Mr. Wonka is looking for?
Played by Aaron
“Now I’m the perfect ticket winner
For on chocolate I did teethe . . .
I’m excited but keep eating
‘cause I only stop to breathe . . .”
Augustus can’t stop eating. He’s a greedy glutton from a sleepy, mountain town in Bavaria. The son of a butcher and a doting mother, Augustus has never learned to live within limits—he is greedy for food, but his greedy appetite reveals something terrible: he idolizes food. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Augustus discovers the terrible consequences of his vice. He literally becomes the fudge that he desires above all things.
Played by Ellie
“More! Now! Again!!
Fetch! . . .
Obey!
I want a Golden Ticket!”
Veruca is salty. She’s a bossy ballerina who pushes everyone around, even her own billionaire father. Veruca is demanding and insufferable. In Willy Wonka’s factory, Veruca meets the squirrels tasked with sorting out the nuts—good from bad. “Veruca Salt, the selfish tot / was never good with the things she got.” Bossy Veruca demands to have the squirrels, who see right away that Veruca is a bad nut. She literally gets cracked and shelled, like a literal bad nut.
Played by Meryn
“They said before my teeth could grow
I talked a mile a minute . . .
They were hoping my mouth would slow
If they put something in it
Daddy bought a pack of gum
And the chewing would not stop!”
Violet is not called the “Queen of Pop” for nothing! She’s constantly chewing gum and constantly running on about how great she thinks she is. “I’m a star!” she declares. You could say that she is full of hot air—a whole lot of nothing. Still, that kind of self-absorption doesn’t come to a good end. Violet finds out that she is indeed the Queen of Pop when her bubble is literally burst!
Played by Levi
“I don’t need to go outside to be what I’ll be
Reality is something I can get from TV . . .
America, get ready for my cyber attack
Mike Teavee is winning and there’s no going back!!”
Mike’s mother says, “I love that little man of mine.” And indeed, Mike’s world is small—he is addicted to screens, endlessly seeking the shallow dopamine-hit from clicking and scrolling. Mike is “wasting his brain, stuck inside his own domain,” and what becomes of him? He literally becomes the small person that he is inside.
The show is bigger than the stage.
